Teachers with guns...what could go wrong?

The whole "arm teachers" is so ludicrous, I can't believe we have to even discuss it seriously. But... apparently we do. These are just a few things off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are many, many more. Let's remember that teachers are there to teach children, not to become armed guards in charge of defending schools.

1. Who pays the guns for the teachers? Are you willing to pay more taxes to pay for guns and ammunition for every teacher in every school in every state across the country?

2. Who pays for the gun/safety training of the teachers? This isn't just a situation where they go to a shooting range once. They have to be able to stay calm and know what to do in a live shooter situation - that is extensive and ongoing training. Are you willing to pay more taxes to pay for that?

3. Will teachers' families get survivor's benefits, like police officers and firefighters, since they're now expected to put their lives on the line like police officers and firefighters? Are we all paying for that, as well? Since we're expecting them to risk their lives, do we actually start paying them decently? And what about paying their salaries, medical and rehab bills, and for in-home care, if they are shot and disabled, and unable to keep working?

4. If there is a shooter in the school, and an armed teacher is in their classroom with their kids, is the teacher expected to risk his/her life, and leave his/her kids alone and undefended to go find and take out the shooter? Who is liable if the teacher is prowling the hallways looking for the shooter, and the shooter finds the unattended kids and shoots them? Or, if in the absence of their teacher, the kids panic, and leave the classroom, and are injured by either the shooter or the police? Or by one of the other armed teachers, who mistakes them for the shooter?

5. Do you realize that in a lot of these cases, you're asking a teacher to shoot a child? If a teacher injures an innocent child that he/she mistook for the shooter, who is liable? Who pays for the liability insurance to cover these situations? Who pays for the lawyers? What do you say to the child's parents?

6. If a child gets ahold of a teacher's gun and injures himself or another child with it, who is liable? What do we say to the child's parents?

7. If a teacher is armed and comes face to face with the shooter, but freezes in the moment and doesn't shoot the shooter - does he/she go to prison? Lose his/her job?

8. If the teacher doesn't want to own or handle a gun, do we force them to have one anyway, or do they lose their job?

Do you have a 9, 10, and 11?
